We provide a high quality, systematic programme for the teaching of Phonics as a basis for our delivery for pupils in Reception and Key Stage One. We believe that phonics sessions should be engaging, interactive and delivered at a quick pace. Our sessions include aspects of physical development as well as oral and auditory phonics practice to embed the sounds taught daily.
From the Summer of 2022, we have selected the Little Wandle Phonics Programme as our statutory scheme to teach phonics. This programme has been built around the update (Letters and Sounds improving rates of progress 2021) and based on many schools’ excellent practice. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised also draws on the latest research into how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers.
We recognise that the teaching of phonics will extend into KS2 where necessary and staff are trained to do this when needed to close gaps in reading and writing skills. To facilitate this we use Little Wandle’s Keep Up programme.
