Class 1 – Reception and Year 1
Welcome to Class 1 – Reception and Year 1
Hello and Welcome!
Welcome to Class 1 with Mrs. Mountcastle, Miss Lloyd and Mrs Wall.
Class 1 is home to our youngest learners at St Lawrence. It comprises of a mixed Reception and Year 1 Class.
We follow both the National Curriculum and The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and we tailor our curriculum to support all learners. The children access the curriculum through teacher led and play based learning. They have half termly topics, with vehicle texts and themes to support their learning. This is ever evolving and is adapted based on the children’s interests.
National Curriculum-Year 1
Our Year 1 children are taught through distinctive and discrete lessons with play based learning integrated into our Foundation subject learning.
English is taught through the use of vehicle texts to hook the children into the learning and allow them to anchor and develop skills and knowledge through repeated practice. The children build the skills over time, in small manageable chunks to ensure learning is deep and meaningful. We aim to provide a spiral curriculum, which ensures the children get plenty of practice to repeat and embed skills.
Little Wandle is our chosen systematic phonics scheme. It is taught daily for both Year 1 and Reception and taught GPCs are then embedded further in our English sessions.
Maths is taught through an adapted version of the White Rose scheme. Similar to English, is it taught in small manageable chunks and uses concrete apparatus to support and embed understanding and learning.
EYFS Curriculum
The EYFS curriculum and Early Excellence practice plays a pivotal role in our learning at St Lawrence. The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum comprises of 7 areas of learning. These are:

- Social and Emotional Development
These Prime areas underpin all other learning and are integral in gaining a good level of development.
Specific Areas
- Literacy

- Expressive Arts and Design
- Understanding the World
Alongside the curriculum the children have the opportunity for enrichment such as trips and weekly Forest School sessions where they will learn a variety of skills from fire lighting to using saws and building shelters.
