Early Years Statement
The Early Years team at St. Lawrence CE Primary recognise that each and every pupil is an individual; unique in their own way, bringing with them their own skills and attributes.
We firmly believe learning is maximised when it takes place in an environment enriched with support, encouragement and nurture.
We provide motivating first-hand experiences to enable children to learn more and remember more.
We encourage creativity, resilience and independence so that our children can begin to take ownership of their own pathways to learning.
We celebrate and welcome difference and diversity by nurturing high self-esteem and respect for others.
We are ambitious for all and believe that everyone can learn, become better thinkers and independent learners by asking questions, solving problems and make thoughtful decisions.
We recognise how learning builds sequentially – by building knowledge, skills and learning behaviours from what the children already know and can do towards identified end points or outcomes.
At St. Lawrence CE Primary, we adhere to the four overarching principles that shape our practice within Early Years settings. These are central to us creating a Foundation Stage that starts with the pupil, supports, and develops the role of parents, offers a high-quality environment, and provides pupils with exciting contexts for their learning. To ensure pupils make outstanding progress in, it is our intent to take into consideration their starting points and needs of our pupils as they begin their learning journey. Every pupil has access to a broad, balanced and curriculum which prepares them for now and for the future in terms of opportunities and experiences. Following personal interests and individual needs, allows us to plan and provide opportunities throughout our EYFS curriculum to support learning and development and achieve their next steps.
Our four overarching principles – from the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage- are:
- Every pupil is a unique pupil, who is consistently learning and can be resilient, capable, confident, and self-assured.
- Pupils learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
- Pupils learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Pupils benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
- Importance of learning and development. Pupils develop and learn at different rates.
