For our Science learning this week, we have been exploring the skeletal system of humans and animals. We worked on labelling the parts of a human skeleton and then made comparisons to the skeletons of different animals. We talked about why certain animals have different bone structures.

This week has been a jammed pack one! We have begun our work on Division in maths; the children have all done brilliantly with this tricky concept and we will continue this work either side of the Easter Break.

We started the week with physical division work using equipment to physically divide before moving onto formal calculations.

On Wednesday, we had a remote learning session with a member of the Sea Cadets Corps. We learnt about the theory behind what makes an object float or sink and how this was then applied to boat building. Following this, in pairs, we were set a challenge to make our own boat from a piece of A4 card, foil and paperclips. Each pair then tested the buoyancy of their boat in water and how much weight could be added before sinking occurred. All the boats were able to float with 390g on board, far exceeding the challenge of 50g, so well done to everyone.

Tuesday saw us implementing the next stage of our Forest School revamp. As well as a general tidy up, great fun, some science/maths learning  also took place as we thought about the best way to remove our old fire pit seating. The old, oak trunk seating had naturally rotted and decayed over the many years of use. The use of levers in the form of crowbars and pushing and pulling forces were all needed for success. Thanks to the enthusiasm for the task by the children,  the work was all carried out in one session, including the new tree trunk seating put in place. We now have much more seating around our firepit. Well done everyone involved.

In Class 2 Forest School sessions this year, we have developed our teamwork, communication and listening skills. We have also learnt how to use different tools and think imaginatively about how we can use natural materials in different ways to complete tasks and challenges.

To begin Science Week, Class 3 studied a diverse range of famous scientists.

Edward Jenner was a very famous English scientist whose name has gone down in medical history as the ‘Father of Vaccination’. All vaccinations we have today owe their roots to his discovery of a vaccine for Small Pox. Ask your children at home, what other scientists we studied?

Ice-cream Experiment An endothermic reaction

The salt took the heat from the milkshake and gave it to the ice and made it a liquid. Because the milkshake didn’t have heat, it froze into ice-cream’

We drew a sun, water and cloud on the bag. We filled the bag with water and blue food colouring and hung it on the window so the sun would heat it up. We used a hairdryer to help the sun.’
